about

Since the last few years have been focused on RECORDING rather than WRITING new songs it took me a little while to figure out what song number RIVER OF TIME would get. It's Officially Life In Song #573. I USED to write 10-15 songs a year. Now I RECORD 10-15 songs a year... so at this rate I should have the project done... in about... 40 years give or take a few... If I could record and release one song a week it would only take about 10 years... LOL.

I definitely have the feeling that I (at age 63) am "running out of time" so there is a thread running through a lot of my recent songs about the urgency of Life. Not wasting a moment. Focusing on the important things. Taking stock and reflecting. Then taking decisive consistent action.

Another theme this song explores is the deterioration of our communities. Our rural churches are losing members as congregations age or leave for the cities. Drive through any small town and there are churches standing empty and being repurposed into thrift shops or recording studios. That's what the line is about in the song, "How did we lose each other and not even notice?"

My spiritual belief is that whatever it is that created all of this that we see and feel and move and breathe in is the Sea of Awareness. We are individual waves upon that sea. Separate only in illusion for we are of the same stuff as that Sea. When we're done being little waves for the moment, we return to that Source.

For me music is all about tuning in and expressing that energy of Creation and allowing it to sing through my temporary "meat suit"

"Take me to the river and wash me back to the Sea..."

Peace, Love & Groovyness,

- Mark

River of Time
Song #573 | 10/18/22 | Recorded 10/2022-11/2023 | Released 11/18/23

Standing in line at the edge of the River of Time
Staring out at you through the bars of the cage of my mind (of my mind)
Longing for love but always walking alone
Take me to the river and wash me back to my home

Watching as the world tweets itself into madness
Dreaming of freedom and waking up to fascists
Longing for you but ending up with me, me, me,
Take me to the river and wash me back to the sea

Refrain:
Heavy is the load
Unseen behind the eyes
Bracing for the cold
Beneath November skies
Take me down, Take me down,
Take me down to the River of Time

Walking the fields in the gathering of twilight
Losing my way in the dimming of my sight
Do our thoughts & prayers determine who we become? Who we become?
Take me to the river, wash me back to the sun

Refrain:

Looking for love, always the butt of laughter
I may be a fool but I realize it doesn’t matter
How did we lose each other and not even notice?
Take me to the river and wash me back to the coast

Refrain:

Row your boat
Gently down the stream
Row row row your boat.
Life is but a dream.

about

Mark Shepard Albany, New York

Welcome to my “Life In Song” project.

Since 1976, I’ve been obsessively and compulsively writing songs. Some of them are inspired by my own life, my attempts to understand love, life, spirituality, peace and justice.

While I recently have started to get a little recognition, you’ve probably never heard my songs ANYWHERE.

But now you can hear them... here... Download. Share. Thanks!
