about

At the time of writing this song, (1985), I was 24 years old. My 21 year old wife was 7 months pregnant with our first child, Andrew.

Married only 4 months, we were not talking or connecting very well. We had no clue how.

I was about as lost and alone as a person can be... and thinking about death... the death of my dream to be a musician, the death of my childhood, all kinds of shitty, not so "positive" thoughts.

And in the midst of this my grandmother turned 100.

I was trying to imagine sticking around for 100 years... and it being good. And it wasn't easy.

As I look back on this song as well as the others that I wrote around this time , the encouraging messages that I was unconsciously "channeling" were, I think, setting the stage for the deeper growth and personal wisdom that would come much, much later...

To this day one of my most useful "Mind Mastery" exercises is to focus on the present moment and literally breathe in all that is beautiful and magical and sweet about "Right Now. " Take a moment and imagine having only a year, 90 days, a month, a week, a day to live... it puts a lot into perspective.

Anyway, yesterday I had a wonderful, open conversation with my son Andrew who turned 30 in May of 2015. You know what I honestly told him?

"I would totally do it all over again!" I just wish I knew THEN what I know NOW! I would have relaxed and trusted more.

IT'S ALL PERFECT! Right Now. It was perfect then. It is still perfect. :o)

lyrics

On My Way

Song# 76 | March 1985

When we walk out in the silence
Will we be gone? Really gone for sure?
And when we dance out in the distance
Will we find the truth that cures?

We are blind and we are lame
We are full of doubt and shame
And in the end, no matter who we are
We are destined for the stars

Refrain:
I am finally on my way
I've seen my share of beautiful days
And I've heard much fine music play
I'm on my way, yes I'm on my way

We can dance upon the ocean
We can dance upon the sea
We can dance up in the air
You can dance anytime with me

Refrain:

We become who we say we are
And we are who we become
And if you ask me, There's only One who knows
Who we really are and where we really are from

Refrain:

about

Mark Shepard Albany, New York

Welcome to my “Life In Song” project.

Since 1976, I’ve been obsessively and compulsively writing songs. Some of them are inspired by my own life, my attempts to understand love, life, spirituality, peace and justice.

While I recently have started to get a little recognition, you’ve probably never heard my songs ANYWHERE.

But now you can hear them... here... Download. Share. Thanks!
