about

Not sure how much to say for this one… it doesn't seem very "positive" or "transformational" at first glance. But it is definitely a part of the transformational journey that caused me to feel enough pain so that I eventually started doing some serious work on myself.

Without the leverage of intense pain, sadness or whatever, we humans tend to not take action... In this case it took me 13 years to act and another 15 years of intense self healing work...

So here's the least you need to know: I wrote this song in 1985...2 months after getting married at age 24. My wife was 21 and pregnant with our first child.

There was no honeymoon. There was no touch. There was no communication. I didn’t know how to talk about what was really going on. She didn’t know how either. It was lonely and painful. Probably writing this song helped me to express the emotions I was grimly holding in so that I didn’t just crash and burn… that would come later.

There is something bittersweet and almost pleasurable about a good sad song… Enjoy?

lyrics

If Roses Are For Everyone

Song #72 | January 1985

Refrain:
If Roses are for everyone
What is left for me?
But to live here like a beggar
In my own prosperity?

You can lose yourself in honesty
You can lose yourself in love
You can lose yourself in who you are
And what you are made of

If only you would hold me now
I’m sure you’d be aware
Of the tragedy of all embraces
Caught in captured air

Refrain:

If you know what truth is
Well, then you better tell me soon
Fo if I can’t find answers here
I’ll have to leave the room

Refrain:

And after giving everything
What else is there to do
But stand here hoping someone finds me
And helps to help me through

about

Mark Shepard Albany, New York

Welcome to my “Life In Song” project.

Since 1976, I’ve been obsessively and compulsively writing songs. Some of them are inspired by my own life, my attempts to understand love, life, spirituality, peace and justice.

While I recently have started to get a little recognition, you’ve probably never heard my songs ANYWHERE.

But now you can hear them... here... Download. Share. Thanks!
